July 2010 Newsletter

Our New CDs

We hope every DAD had a wonderful Father’s Day. Did you spend the day with family? We did. Our son-in-law, daughter and grandkids came to our house for the afternoon and we spent most of the time in the pool.

After the sad news we have received over the last week we are reminded that none of us are guaranteed to live to be a certain age. Please remember these two Chapters, R2 and Z, as they scramble to put the pieces back together. Condolences go to both Chapters.

We’ve seen a few more great days for riding, finally! We are hoping everyone is enjoying the days they have. Doug and Jan’s article will give you an idea of what has been happening. Be sure to read it!

Wing Ding is coming! At this writing we are busy packing and making plans for the trip. This will be our 1st Wing Ding and we are looking forward to the experience. We will be traveling with Jim and Rita Boyer and are planning to visit the “House on the Rock” in Wisconsin and the “Field of Dreams” in Dyersville, Iowa on the way out. On the way home we are planning to go “Up North” to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

While we are gone, please call or email Mike and Chris Reynolds if you need anything. They will be in charge until we return on July 10. We are sure they can handle the responsibility and will do very well!

Many of you already know, an announcement was made at Spring Wing Warm  Up, that we are losing our District Directors, Stan and Becky Egli. There have been some major changes in their lives that have caused them to take a look at the amount of time they will have to devote to GWRRA leadership. With tears of sadness they will be leaving their post as soon as someone can be put in place. Ron and Diana Miller, our Region Directors, have asked that anyone interested in the District Director position contact them by email or letter to submit a resume. If you need more information, please contact them through the Region D website or Stan and Becky through the District website. We will help you in any way we can, also.

Have a wonderful July 4th! We’ll catch up on all the FUN you had while we were gone!

Be safe! And we’ll catch ya later!!

Don and Gwen Lamley

Chapter Directors IN D2

Say Hi to Your New ACDs

Hello to our D2 friends!

Well, the temperatures have been great, but due to all this rain we have had to do some juggling in the ride schedule. But thanks to everyone’s flexibility that is involved in keeping that ride schedule as full as possible.

By the time you get this newsletter we will already have gone to Tiffany’s in Topeka and some to the Ohio rally, and some to Wing Ding. There have been a few other  spontaneous rides arranged so be sure to listen for your One Call. If you are not on our One Call list just let Cheri Malcolm know and she will get you fixed up.

And to those of you going to Wing Ding, we who were not able to make it this year will be anxiously waiting to hear all the stories and see your picturesJ

A big “thank you” goes out to Dave Williams for keeping us all level…tee hee…or I should say updated on our levels. It was really exciting to hear that we have 100% participation in the levels program. If you are not sure what that is all about just ask Dave Williams, or anyone from the Team and we will get you the information you need. And, Oooooo…..do I like Culvers ice cream…thanks for that too, DaveJ

To those of you who are traveling to Wind Ding, or just heading out on vacation, be safe whether you are on your bike or in your car. Take lots of pictures and bring them to the meeting to share. And be sure you give some to Steve Paske for the Chapter  scrapbook. He is doing a great job, but needs more pictures.

We have had several returning couples and new couples at our meetings this year. If you have not given them a “Howdy“, be sure to catch them at the next ride or meeting and welcome them.

A couple of things to remember for July are:

July 3rd breakfast at The Auburn House

July 7th Dinner ride to Maria’s Restaurant

July 10th Gilmore Museum and Clara’s Restaurant

July 17th , Section Picnic at Chain O Lakes

You should receive One call reminders or changes. Hope to see as many of you as we can at any of theseJ

Until then, Sweetness and Sunshine signing out.

Mike and Chris Reynolds

SAY HI TO OUR 2010 D2 COUPLE OF THE YEAR, DISTRICT CHAPTER EDUCATORS OF 2009!! & MOTORIST AWARENESS DIRECTORS

Friends,

Hardly seems possible that we have just pasted over the midpoint of our calendar year. Hopefully we will have a long riding season into fall and are not half way into the riding season. In this month article I would like for us to look back and reflect and look forward with anticipation while focusing on our primary goal of FUN, SAFETY AND KNOWLEDGE.

There is a reason the D2 Chapter of the GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION was selected as REGION CHAPTER OF THE YEAR. Friends, that recognition was earned and not by accident. As a group we are something special and I believe it is worth our time and energy to examine why that is so. One thing that makes us special is the variety of personalities we have within our organization and the acceptance that we all seem to have of each other. Several years ago Char and I had the opportunity to the study personality types. Since that original introduction we have had other opportunities to examine how and why people are different. That education has been one of the highlights of our lives. If you have not had the opportunity to examine personality types please seek an opportunity for that to happen in your life, it will change your forever. I discovered that all of us have something to offer each other and society as a whole. The chapter participants of D2 recognize that also and allow each of our different personalities to contribute to our success as a group. Let’s never lose that quality. In a speech the other day the comment that gossip and slander are like a snake in the grass that will kill an organization. We do not have that disease and we will work hard to stay free of it.

FUN: Our chapter is fun. It seems that wherever we are whatever the challenge we make the best of the situation with joy. We have been rained on, froze out, taken down the gravel road on our bikes and detours of life but seem to find a way to see the sunshine and love of life. We will work hard to keep that FUN attitude.

Safety: As a group we operate our motorcycles in a very safe manner and seem to be safe in other areas of our lives. We are considerate and caring of other and generally put others ahead of ourselves. When presented with an opportunity for further education D2 always responds in a positive manner. In the levels program 39% of our active membership has chosen to advance to level IV and maintain those qualifications. We will work to stay safe in all that we do.

Knowledge: In addition to our formal classes we learn from the mistakes of ourselves and others. When one of us has a life challenge we recognize it for what it is, talk about it without fault finding, and move on with all members learning from that situation. This is a great group quality, which many organizations do not have. We should fight with all our might to keep this quality of learning, especially from our mistakes. Individually, and as a group, we will work to increase in knowledge regarding our cycle riding and life.

Be safe, ride safe,

Dave and Char Williams CE

P.S. As Motorist Awareness Representatives we will be working at Wing Ding collecting signatures for the NO PHONE ZONE emphasis.

The last month has passed quickly just like all of them do; but by participating we all have “fun, safety and

knowledge. ” Each meeting includes laughter at ourselves and we gain knowledge from each other and our leaders on riding safely and watching closely for the four wheel drivers who might not be watching for us. We have to protect ourselves in every way we can by being alert at all times, and yes, co-riders, this includes you.

Parking lot practice on Sunday, May 23, was a good time for all attendees as well as informative for the gentlemen who practiced. Thank you guys for caring about yourselves and your co-riders (usually your spouses).

There were 12 for dinner at Casa Grande in Northwood. Then several of us left the next day for Spring Wing Warm-up in Greensburg. It was exciting to receive the #1 District Chapter Award, but surprising for Doug and Jan to receive their level 4 (in front of all those people!) and great for Dave and Char to receive the District Rider Education Award. Congratulations! We had a nice shady place to meet and rest at Lamleys’ campsite.

What a fantastic group we have in Chapter D-2!! So fun and full of laughter. Some of us took in some of the seminars and enthusiastically frequented the vendors. Thanks go to the state directors for all their planning, organization, and work.

Twenty ate at the Auburn House and 19 at Billy’s in downtown Zulu. Our thanks go to all of you who attended and enjoyed the rides and fellowship.

Doug and Jan were the only hungry ones to go to Harlan Café at 8 am on June 12. Howard showed up later, then Wayne and Judy. We decided that since all of us had been to the scheduled location (Grand Rapids, Ohio) that we would just ride. So sorry that some of you thought it was going to rain (what’s that?) because we had a lovely sunny day following Howard Pletcher through northwestern Ohio. First, we visited Bryan to get a picture of the deteriorating train depot, then to Stryker to see that lovely refurbished railroad depot, and the cemetery where William J. Knight is buried. (More about him below.) Then we visited a beautiful covered bridge which was built in 1999. After enjoying the countryside, we ate at Lester’s in Bryan.

As told us by our historian, Howard Pletcher:William J. Knight,  Medal of Honor recipient. Rank and organization: Private, Company E, 21st Ohio Infantry. Place and date. Georgia, April, 1862. Entered service at Farmer Center, Defiance County, Ohio.  Date of issue: September 1863. Citation. One of the 19 of 22 men (including 2 civilians) knows as the Andrews Raiders who, by direction of Gen. Mitchell (or Buell) penetrated nearly 200 miles south into enemy territory and captured a railroad train at Big Shanty, GA., in an attempt to destroy the bridges and track between Chattanooga and Atlanta. This was the event that inspired the 1956 movie “The Great Locomotive Chase.” William Knight was the engineer of the General during the chase. The Andrews Raiders received the very first Medals of Honor after the Metal was authorized by Congress in 1862.

On June 19, David and Char Williams met two trikes at Grace Point church. Why didn’t we “southerners” think about saving them time; we could have met them at Celebration Hall where we joined the rest of the group, ten total? Anyway, they escorted us on a wonderful ride after asking for prayer to have a safe ride and a sunny day. We were blessed with a perfect day (even though rain was predicted) for the ride to Tiffanys in Topeka; the food was delicious. The tour took us through interesting Amish country where the crops, homes, animals and scenery were beautiful. Jan asked an elderly Amish lady about her black exterior bonnet which is tailored to perfection. She said that she makes them but not all young folks do. They cost about $20 each if bought. The conversation at the dinner table was so hilarious; we felt that we know each other better each time we share about our lives and our past. If you can possibly join one of our groups for a scheduled ride, please do so. We welcome GWRRA members.

We hope to see you all at the next D-2 meeting or at a ride.

Your Ride Coordinators,

Doug and Jan Ort

2010 D2 CHRISTMAS PARTY

The 2010 Chapter D-2 Christmas Party is going to be chaired by Wayne & Judy Burkett. The party is departing from the regular format this year as far as location and content. Not only will there be a few changes this year, the entire project will be new

It is necessary for your full cooperation in order for this get together to be successful.

The immediate task that you are assigned to do is a picture of you and your spouse (corider) with bike/trike in a close up photo, dressed in your chapter colors, no helmets (unless sitting on seat) or jackets. If your spouse ( corider) does not have chapter colors THAT IS OK. We want them in the picture no matter what. Of course we want them to come and enjoy Christmas Party with us. This Christmas Party will be unlike any that you have attended.

WE PROMISE!

We are not prepared to disclose to you the location of the party. We will only tell you it is at a private home, hosted by the home’s family and some of their friends if need be. So let us get the cameras out and start shooting.
