Our New CDs
August already! Where has the summer gone!
We want to thank Mike and Chris Reynold’s for leading the Chapter gathering in July. You guys did a great job! Our only regret is … we lost the District Traveling Plaque to the Evansville chapter. Chapter Z made a week long ride out of it. They were planning to continue on to Michigan after capturing the plaque.
Hope all of you had a great July 4th! We spent the weekend in Des Moines, Iowa, at our very first Wing Ding. We have never seen so many vendors in one place. Perhaps some of you have seen more, but we were impressed. The vendor we really liked was Wing Soft. They re-stuffed our seat and “Oh, my, goodness”, our ride was so much nicer. Burkett’s, Willliams, Danner’s, Ort’s, Kirschner’s and we found things to do every day we were there. We had so much fun this year that
most of us have already made reservations for next year in Knoxville. Hope you all make plans to go with us. Information is available online already.
Our District Assistant Directors, Terry and Cheri Malcolm, organized their last section picnic as part of the District Team on July 17 at Chain O’ Lakes. Four of the seven Chapters were represented. Chapters O2, H, U and D2 were there to enjoy the picnic and fellowship. Good showing guys! Weihmiller’s, Malcolm’s, Rostorfer’s and us camped for the weekend. Ort’s, Burkett’s and Pomeroy’s rode to Shipshewana for a while and Ort’s and Reynold’s enjoyed the evening meal with us. Sorry most of you didn’t stick around for the campfire. We roasted the BIGGEST marshmallows you ever saw! Thanks Sara!
To keep you up to date, the Mark Lowry concert tickets have been paid for and there will be no tickets to hand out. We will go as a group and be seated together when we get there. So … no ticket to lose! We’ll make plans for the ride later. We have until September.\
Just a couple of reminders…we have a Chapter Camping Weekend planned for August 27 and 28 at Bixler Lake in Kendallville. We will be camping in the same area as last year. Come on Friday and your entrance fee will be waived. Wait until Saturday and I believe the entrance fee is $5 per vehicle.
Due to lack of interest, the Labor Day ride to French Lick has been cancelled. We’ll come up with something to do that weekend if there is enough interest. Let us or Doug and Jan know if you have a suggestion. Someone has suggested that we go with Beard’s and Rostorfer’s to Ohio to see some of Bud’s dad’s motorcycles on display in a motorcycle museum. Let us know if you are interested.
September 16 is the start of the Region D Rally/Convention in Coldwater Michigan. Don’t forget to register! The GWRRA International Couple of the Year, Fred and Mandy Mew (Region H in Texas) will be attending.
Be safe! And we’ll catch ya later!!

Say Hi to Your New ACDs
Hello to our D2 friends!
WOW!! Another month almost gone. We are trying to fill our time with as much fun stuff as possible while the sun shinesJ I am really liking this retirement thing, especially since I have become a full time member of the SSC (Six-Saturday Club). I went with Doug Ort, Wayne Burkett, and Dave Williams to Troy, Ohio about a week ago. The weather was beautiful and the ride was great as was the company. Thanks for having me on “speed dial” Wayne.
Speaking of a great time….the picnic at Chain of Lakes was so much fun. Chapter O2 from Elkhart and Chapter H from Goshen came. Even though it was bring your on picnic, there was food to share and lots of good stories. It was good meeting some new folks. Thanks to John and Sara Weihmiller for sharing their shady camp spot and “fans” later that afternoon with some of us who hung around until evening. We all pooled our food and what a feast we had. D2 campers sure can cook goooooood!! We left about 8:00 p.m. for our ride home where we encountered seven deer in various places as we traveled down state road 8. Only one crossed the road in front of us, but we had seen him in time. You really have to watch out for our furry forest friends.
We have been having a great time so far this summer. We are looking forward to making as many rides as we can but still making sure our grandchildren still know who we areJ
By the next meeting hope to have seen many of you join us at Ozzie’s, Dude’s, Laker’s, Quilt Garden ride, Baer Field, and Chapter U’s Hog Roast.
Until then, Sweetness and Sunshine signing out.
Mike and Chris Reynolds

SAY HI TO OUR 2010 D2 COUPLE OF THE YEAR, DISTRICT CHAPTER EDUCATORS OF 2009!! & MOTORIST AWARENESS DIRECTORS
Greetings,
August is here and the hope of an extended riding season is in the air. Char and I returned from Wing Ding with a renewed faith and trust in our GWRRA organization. As far as we could tell everything was well organized and came off with little difficulties. It was nice to see our fellow “Hoosiers” working at the registration table. Many vendors seemed busy most of the time and when talking they seemed pleased with the business generated. Our bike was only blessed with a few new LED lights to brighten its’ day.
All of us need to thank our higher powers for guidance and safety this last month without serious injuries. Jim and Rita Boyer encountered several unexpected events all hooked together with the result being a personal contact with pavement. Passengers and bike are somewhat damaged and sore but a full recovery is expected for all. I am sure Jim will give us a full report and show off his reconditioned jacket. Howard Pletcher watched very attentively as a sleeping driver started heading into his lane and veered well off the road onto the grassy shoulder barely missing the car which hit his trailer and caused his bike to also go down. Again guardian angels were on duty providing protection.
We all should become more aware and safer riders as a result of these experiences.
As summer continues we need to review what we already know and make a concerted effort to practice all of our knowledge.
HYDRATION: Always keep plenty of water available and remember that we lose lots of body moisture from sun and wind without even sweating. One of my doctors suggests that we should drink ½ of our body weight in ounces of pure water each day. That is without any consideration of cycle riding.
Please stay hydrated. Some symptoms of dehydration might be dry or sticky mouth, low or no urine output, concentrated urine appears dark yellow, not producing tears, sweating may stop, muscle cramps, nausea and heart palpitations.
CLOTHING: My own personal experience is that long sleeves especially white wicking fabric is cooler than exposed skin. (especially when moving) On the return trip from Wing Ding I used a special “soaker” cloth for neck and back that was a lifesaver. I will share more at August meeting. Using wicking fabric shirts also has great advantages. When we started out after a rest stop I would take one of our water bottles and pour half a bottle down each arm from the inside before we resumed riding. We were able to complete the ride home in 90+ heat with only mild discomfort.
REST STOPS: More frequent rest stops with longer duration should be observed in excessive heat. During those stops be sure to hydrate with pure water, not sodas and take time for body temperature to cool down. Be sure to listen closely to your own body. If fatigue, light headedness, blurred vision, muscle cramping, start occurring stop immediately, hydrate, and find ways to cool the body.
Let’s all have an enjoyable and safe finish to our riding season.
Dave and Char Williams CE of D2

Getting right into the riding fun, we recognize that other activitiesmight be taking priority sometimes. That’s fine, your immediate families come first and then this family at D-2. Since our children and their families both live out of town, and we have six Saturdays a week, we usually have time to enjoy riding with whoever comes.
Crossroads Restaurant was led by Keith and Louise Pomeroy. It was a beautiful evening for the four bikes (including 6 people). We headed directly there to eat, and then decided to head out to see other sites. We went north on 9 to Columbia City, east on old 30 to 3,then north to Churubusco to get ice cream at the Magic Wand. By then the clouds looked fairly threatening. Everyone made it home safely. The storms hit later, a large tree from our neighbors yard fell across our driveway. We were fortunate that was all, compared with some who had damaged roofs, vehicles or no electricity.
On Friday, June 18, nine people went to an auction to benefit an Amish school on Roberts Road. The food again was well worth the ride and the donation. The weather looked beautiful, but again a storm raged in the clouds. Many of us headed home; Doug and I made it just in time—again.
On Saturday, June 26, the weather stations forecasted electrical storms, so we phoned everyone on the list and canceled the ride to Red Pig in Ottawa, OH. We didn’t want to spend a boring day doing nothing; but on the last call John and Sara Weihmiller said they had nothing else planned, so they came to our house for lunch. As we finished eating, the phone rang with bad news The Lamleys and Boyers were headed to Wing Ding, but Jim and Rita took a spill on gravel at Lowell, IN. Since we have a trailer and a vehicle to pull it, John and Doug headed to help them out. They brought the bike and camper back to Boyer’s garage. The Boyer’s son-in law drove them back to Fort Wayne for care of their injuries. Fortunately, they will heal so keep them in your prayerful thoughts.
Then on Monday, The Williamses, Danners and Burketts left for DesMoines. They reached their destination in fine shape. The Burketts decided to ride on north for awhile, then were home by Saturday; the Danners headed home after one night to prepare for their future trip to Russia (we’re jealous!). The Kirchners and Orts left on Wednesday, stopped at Galesburg, IL for the night, then on to the Wing Ding, arriving about 2 pm on Friday. It was a beautiful ride with clear skies, some fields showing the stress from too much water and other fields looking green and healthy. We took a break at Pella, IA, where Pella Windows are made. It is a huge factory, but the city is unique with parks and many colorful flowers, windmills, and a nice downtown shopping area where we dined at a local café.
On Friday evening, 10 of us gathered for dinner including Mike and Pat Murphy, who were CD’s for D-2 when we joined GWRRA. Mike’s job transferred them to Grand Junction, Colorado. We had a wonderful visit with these nice people.
The vendors at Wing Ding were an attraction for all of us; costing some of us some $$. The highlights included opening ceremonies, seminars, a light show with approximately 150 bikes/trikes; the parade through downtown DesMoines included approximately 650 vehicles, and closing ceremonies. Unfortunately, none of our tickets were drawn for any of the prizes. It was announced that 2011 will be in Knoxville TN; 2012 in Madison WI; 2013 in Greensville SC and 2014 in Fort Wayne IN. A few of us are already registered for Knoxville. We hope others will join us for a lovely ride and fun trip.
It was reported at the July meeting that Mike Reynolds led the ride on Saturday, July 10, to Clara’s in Battlecreek MI and the Gilmore Museum. There were 4 bikes and 7 people who enjoyed this day outing. So sorry, Mike, that we couldn’t join you.
Because it was a very hot evening on July 7, several people met us at Maria’s for dinner. In total, though, there were 14 hungry people who enjoyed the fellowship. Some of us enjoyed the ride.
Three of the chapters that Terry and Cherrie Malcolm represent at the state level attended the picnic at Chain O’ Lakes. There were 30+ people who shared in the picnic and the lovely summer day. One group rented canoes and paddled around the lake. Others camped the night before and after. Doug and I stayed for supper and enjoyed the campers’ hospitality around the fire with all kinds of great food. Thanks go to Terry and Cherrie for a great picnic in the pavilion.
Be alert, be safe!! We’ll see you ‘round the bend.
Your ride coordinators,
Doug and Jan Ort

2010 D2 CHRISTMAS PARTY
The 2010 Chapter D-2 Christmas Party is going to be chaired by Wayne & Judy Burkett. The party is departing from the regular format this year as far as location and content. Not only will there be a few changes this year, the entire project will be new
It is necessary for your full cooperation in order for this get together to be successful.
The immediate task that you are assigned to do is a picture of you and your spouse (corider) with bike/trike in a close up photo, dressed in your chapter colors, no helmets (unless sitting on seat) or jackets. If your spouse ( corider) does not have chapter colors THAT IS OK. We want them in the picture no matter what. Of course we want them to
come and enjoy Christmas Party with us. This Christmas Party will be unlike any that you have attended.
WE PROMISE!
We are not prepared to disclose to you the location of the party. We will only tell you it is at a private home, hosted by the home’s family and some of their friends if need be. So let us get the cameras out and start shooting.
The party will be Dec. 4th,2010 – time to be determined later, but we are thinking 5:30PM
PLEASE SEND YOUR COUPLES WITH BIKE PICTURES FOR THE
